Great Minds

Grabbed the phone to send a text message to my husband to ask him to buy firewood. And saw that there was a message from him to me saying, “Please buy firewood.”

Great minds think alike but some of them think faster than others.

Now I have to go get firewood before I proceed to cook the planned dishes for our Jewish Thanksgiving.

“I had no idea Jewish people had Thanksgiving,” a student said after I shared this information in class.

So I had to explain that I invented my own Jewish Thanksgiving because I need to perfect my gefilte fish recipe.

    1. I can’t go to sleep before the stupid gelatin in the gefilte fish begins to set. And it is really more likely to ignite than to set, it seems.

This is a very time-consuming dish.

You are a better Jew than me. 🙂 I am indifferent to gefilte fish in the best case.

What I love are fried cod (жаренный на сковороде хек – in case “cod” means several fish in English) and salomon baked with cheese. One can add eggs too to the salomon.

I don’t like the smell of fish and those two fish cooked in this particular way seem to barely have any fish smell at all.

      – Everybody is until they try mine. 🙂 This time I refused to do the Polish Jew thing and add sugar, so I made it sweet with beets. And the jelly is all beet red now! This will be hardcore.

  2. Thanksgiving isn’t a religious holiday. I’m astonished that your students think this. Nobody gets into separation of church and state debates over this holiday! If anything, it’s a New England harvest regional holiday adopted by other regions of the country with nationalistovertones.. It is very much a holiday of national myth-making and amnesia.

My brother has decided it’s not Thanksgiving without the turkey. He just brought home an insane amount of turkey along with sides from Boston Market. I have just put a pumpkin pie in the oven. I will probably put in some samosas, and might make some fried banana peppers later. I miss the parts of my family who live up north.

      – No, religion wasn’t discussed at all. If people around here know anything about Jews, they know it from me. And the very first information I share is: practicing Judaism and being Jewish are not the same thing. 🙂

      – Sounds phenomenal! Have fun!
