There are people who are seriously discussing how great it would be if the compulsory military service were brought back in the US.
This is what happens to those who don’t read Clarissa ‘s Blog and are clueless about the collapse of the nation-state.
OT (and to maybe give this post some traffic): One of the channels on my cabel package is this: http://www.muz1.tv/
Anyhoo, for the past week or so they keep showing this….. thing. It’s hours and hours long and sort of a movie but not really and no plot. It mixes short scenes (some of which sort of seque into each other) with bits of dialogue (often set in some kind of idealized past with all sorts of Russian stereotypes on display) and musical numbers by what are supposed to be stars (I recognized Vera Serduchka and A-dessa but that was about it).
What the hell is it?
The website gives no clue (that I could find given that my knowledge of Russian is very poor).

Does the show have a title?

No, that’s the weird thing. I can’t find any trace of it on the channel’s website but it’s been replaying several times a day.
I did find a reference to a movie in which Pugacheva plays an ingenue in ….. 2003?!?!?
I really hope it’s supposed to be a parody or joke or something.

OMG there’s a cultural threat LET’S CIRCLE THE WAGONS AND KILL IT WITH FIRE
[ahem]
Why are American nationalists so predictable … [sigh]
Actually, the end of conscription was likely the best thing that happened to the US military — military leaders could worry less about some disgruntled kid from East Numbskull, New Jersey figuring out that he could take care of his post-draft problems by an “accidental grenade discharge” involving someone in his chain of command …

Reluctantly, I am for it. We can’t keep having as soldiers only those without other options, and we can’t keep outsourcing wars. Fighting them with mercenaries, which is what these security contracting firms we use are. Of course, I seriously doubt this will actually happen.
