For the very first time ever, my academia.edu profile has had a visitor from Ukraine:
Freaky! I wish this mysterious person got in touch.
I’m getting heavily into academia.edu these days. It’s turning into quite a useful website for academic articles and books one can use for research. Academia.edu is like an intellectual’s version of Facebook. I hated it at first (because my psychological rigidity often gets the better of me) but now I’m beginning to see its uses.

I love academia.edu. It has allowed me to circulate my work more widely, got in me touch with some high profile academics, and even resulted in an opportunity for me that I wouldn’t have otherwise have had. I think it’s awesome. (But I also like facebook–though my FB is very very private and only for close friends/family.)

I’m not surprised that there are people in Ukraine who would find your research relevant. But mine? That’s just weird.

Did you see the little Ghana flags from my profile? They are coming to me via you. 🙂

I see the Ghanaian flags. I actually don’t get many Ghanaian hits. I have had a total of 54 of which 11 are in the last 30 days. My top five countries this month are the US, Canada, Germany, Russia, and Argentia or the five nations that combined have most of the world’s population of Russian-German ancestry.

I belong to what appears to be a similar site called ResearchGate. Maybe it is specifically for STEM fields? I am not sure.

How far along in your academic career do you have to be to get one? I’m fed up with Facebook and looking for an alternative.

You can get a profile at any time. It’s actually a great way for graduate students to connect with more established academics (or at least I think it is.) I have graduate students from different countries following me and I in turn follow them. I would say it’s more like an academic LinkedIn than it’s like Facebook. But I think that it can only help you to join. As far I can see, there isn’t really a downside. 🙂

Or someone’s using Tor?

Just a thought. 🙂
