Popasne

The town of Popasne has been liberated by the Ukrainian Army. This Ukrainian soldier is trying to make two kids in the liberated town smile:

And it’s working.

  1. Recently read an article in a Polish news magazine on the situation in the Crimea. Main points (which I’m sure you already know but others here might not).

there are people who are against the status quo but they have to meet in secret
the intelligentsia and business classes are both very unhappy about the situation and clearing out
the ones who like the current situation are those on welfare/retirement pensions because they’re getting more money (and don’t have the sense to realize all the people they need to keep an economy going are getting out and what that will mean).
there’s a lot of theft under the guise of nationalization (which isn’t helping the business climate any)

The author quotes locals that think Putin isn’t sure what to do himself. Crimea is too big to be one large military base (though there are rumors about plans to turn the largest city into an old style Soviet closed city like Gorki) and the international reaction means no real economy can be built there either and the previously heralded bridge is also a non-starter (too expensive and not likely to last if it does get built).
