In an endless flow of pearl-clutchers who still can’t get over the existence of porn, here us a refreshingly good article about 50 Shades of Grey:
Fantasy, and especially erotic fantasy, is the absolutely best way to recharge oneself with energy and, as the linked piece points out, to deal with the problems one encounters in daily life.
Good article, and the last paragraph is really strong. A good response to the puritanical paranoia that has so many people wriggling and foaming at the mouth.
I am totally pro-fantasy. The problem with 50 Shades for me is not the BDSM. For me, the problem is that the book (at least the first one — I did not read the other 2 in the series) is so poorly written that it gives up on the fantasy elements once the relationship has started. I remember thinking that the sex scenes were extremely lame and that the protagonist’s overuse of the words, “Oh my!” drove me mad. It takes more than a look to get someone going, in my experience (although admittedly that’s not necessarily the case in the early parts of a relationship), but not for these two idiots. Regardless, there are better written fantasy pieces out there. Erotic literature is great if you can find a decent writer in that genre.

Of course, the book is trash and the writing is piss poor. But it fulfills its purpose of facilitating arousal for millions of people – otherwise they wouldn’t buy it – and that’s already very socially valuable. I’d say, extraordinarily socially valuable. 🙂
