Eagleton focuses on the UK in the article. My impression from reading about it is that there seems to be more deliberate malice at work in the tearing down of the UK university system. I’m not sure what led the British upper classes to hate their higher education system so intensely. I thought we had it the worst in the US, but I think the UK has outdone us.
