Merkel is now reaping the fruits of her own idiocy. She agreed to pay Putin a visit on Victory Day and, as a result, had to listen to humiliating statements about how the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact made total sense. And Merkel could do nothing but bleat meekly that well, yes, the Nazi Germany did start World War II. As if we’d even have the entire problem of Nazi Germany had Stalin not made every effort to bring Hitler to power and then strengthen him enormously.

Something about Putin’s incessant need to bug Merkel* seems extremely puerile. If he were 7 years old I’d say he likes her and is trying to get her attention (his version of pulling pigtails she doesn’t have).
The question is why does she put up with it? For the gas I assume (just as I assume she always expects the worst, must juvenile behavior from him possible). Is this the most dysfunctional relationship in Europe?
*I suppose he thinks he’s humiliating her and I suppose a lot of Russian boneheaded lunks think so too, but that’s not the vibe I get from her during these… episodes, more like adult weariness at a nasty child (as if she’s trying to remind herself that it’s not the child’s fault….)

- Absolutely. The metaphor of the pigtails is very popular among Russian dissidents. They are saying that all Putin wants is to get the West to like him in this childish, idiotic way.
