Dylann Roof ‘ s Family

So let’s look at the poor family of Dylann Roof ‘ s that is so hugely victimized by the murders he committed.

This weird – looking fellow is Dylann ‘ s father, a wife – beater and a freak. Dylann is from a broken home and the reason for the home being broken is the father’s violence. Of course, before the father had a chance to break the home he had with Dylann ‘ s stepmother, Dylann ‘ s mother had walked out on her son and refused to have much to do with him.

Low-lifes, dead-beats, irresponsible parents who abandon their kids – this is the world that produced this murderer. None of this makes him any less responsible, of course, but we should abstain from equaling the hardship of the people who made him what he is with that of his victims.

Dysfunctional adults are a common story. The idiot had to get his screwed up ideas someplace and his parents are a likely source. I don’t believe the family deserves sympathy. Had they been paying attention, this could have been stopped. Apparently, he was talking about this for months with his friends, which makes them legally responsible as well.

The common view in the comments seems to be:

“Oh, don’t start the excuses. I know a cracking lad who grew up in a broken home but went on to get a double first from Cambridge.”

People think looking for explanations automatically takes responsibility off the perpetrator, but not doing that leads to taking all responsibility off parents whose children murder or travel to join ISIS.

  He’s an adult, so he’s had time and opportunity aplenty to start undoing the damage done to him by his parents. And he chose not to do that. The responsibility is all his.
  
  However, it’s irresponsible and infantile on our part to avoid the full extent of knowledge about the situation.

    My POV is that the idiot had time to try to unlearn what he was taught, but had no desire apparently to do so. So yes, he is fully responsible for his actions. That said, he learned racism from someone and was allowed to drop out of school at an age that (9th grade??) virtually guarantees no future. His parents may be responsible for his beliefs, and are responsible for his education, so, to me, they deserve all of the flak they get. The fact that the parents are screw-ups takes nothing away from his responsibility — everyone who contributed needs to be held accountable.
    
    Interesting question in light of recent events: if the killer had been something other than WASP, would the police simply have shot him instead of taking him into custody?

      I agree completely. If we don’t analyze Roof’s story, we will miss out on finding out important information that can help reduce the number of situations that produce this kind of people.

      There’s an ongoing meme on twitter and tumblr that compares dead black victims of police violence and what they (allegedly) did and contrasts them with white serial killers who were taken in alive. It updates every time a black victim of police violence or a white serial killer makes the news. It’s an amazing series of coincidences.
      
      At this point I feel like I’m just checking off boxes on mass murderer-suicide bingo:
      Broken home, check. Egregious sense of entitlement, check. Failing at life spectacularly, check. Easy access to weapons, check. Possible mental issues, check. Manifesto with poorly thought out ideas and/or extremist ideology of some sort, check. Alarming social media photos, check. Acquaintances and friends describe the guy as a loner, check. Same acquaintances and friends say they didn’t notice anything off about him, check. White, check. Male, check.

  No, of course not. And it is crucial to discuss what kind of neglect and abuse turns people into suicide bombers. I think we are all intelligent and educated enough here not to be terrified of analysis and discussion.
