It sounds like in Zimbabwe nobody cares about the stupid lion or tiger or whatever it was. People might even have actual problems in Africa that make the lion hysteria look a tad silly.

I dunno, it’s quite possible to walk and chew gum at the same time. I, for one, find it very easy to be outraged about more than one thing at a time.
‘Why do you care about X when there is a more pressing issue Y?’ has always struck me as an unreasonable line of inquiry. Note that no matter what X is, one can always find a suitable Y to browbeat others into submission. It’s so effective, too (which is why I use it from time to time:D).

Hi Clarissa, can you take the comment out of moderation? This is weird.

It’s a cultural thing. To me, having any emotions at all about an animal that doesn’t even belong to you is incomprehensible. Animals are food. And sometimes shoes. The logic of people who eat meat and then feel sorry for animals escapes me altogether.
Rich societies are a lot more likely to have pet stores and worry about “animal rights” than poor societies. And it’s a great thing that some societies can afford to go to these lengths because all of the other problems they have are solved. But I’m sure these societies won’t fall apart if I poke gentle fun at them once in a while, eh?

This overlooks the fact that carnivores are sacred creatures. I write as a second-order vegetarian who would never eat one of my fellow carnivores, but agrees that herbivores are food.

You live, you learn. I never heard this kind of explanation. 🙂
But hey, I don’t eat onions or sweet peppers if they are even slightly cooked. I’m in no position to criticize anybody. 🙂

The logic of people who equate slaughtering animals for food with killing just for the thrill of taking a life escapes me as well.
It can’t be about shooting because you could use a inanimate object as a target. It has to be about the thrill of murder.

The result is what matters. I eat a lot more animals in my lifetime than any hunter can kill in his. What does it really matter to the animals where they are killed to feed me or to entertain somebody else? They’re still dead.

I understand what you’re saying and I don’t have a logical rebuttal to it, unfortunately.
Do you care for any laws against animal abuse/torture? Do you feel bad when you read about a poacher killing a baby elephant? I do, and I can’t explain why. Sure, there’s a cultural aspect to it, but I grew up in a country where animals are routinely abused and animal protection laws are non-existent, and here I am.

I agree with SB here and will try to explain my own why. Cows are not going to become extinct anytime soon and they are not wild species participating in complex & fragile ecosystem. Many people care about this lion because they are afraid its fate forshadows the future of lions as species. Ditto about elephants. People have made too many animal species disappear already and many are currently “endangered” (the latter word is official status).
I care about preserving animal and plant species for us and for next generations. If all books by your/my favorite author are burned, people will make new great art. If tigers disappear, it’s very likely that they won’t appear again as species. Ever.

I care about preserving nature not only because we are a biological species ourselves and need it, not only because natural environments are useful for science and making money, but also for beauty’s sake. You said we die but art stays. Change art for nature.
