I like skill-focused job posts – I can cross them off my list immediately!

Sad how some people with severe mental problems forego treatment because they believe ‘everyone feels like this’. Actually, I wonder for example if she truly believes that every woman (or even a significant minority) go through a ‘check-list’ in the shower, or is it just an excuse to avoid the painful process of treatment

The problem of police not being willing to take rape reports seriously has been addressed in various countries by adding special police trained to deal with rape trauma victims, take them seriously, and so on. And even here in Maringouin, the police have experts on rape and domestic violence cases, you get transferred to them if you make that kind of report. When I was much younger and the world was not so sophisticated, the university didn’t really want you to report rape but there were feminist groups that would teach you how to get past any hostile police and get the report made.

  I’m all for the police having people trained on how to deal with rape (and other trauma) victims.
  
  But the feministing crowd doesn’t want that, they want to micro-manage other people’s lives which is just incredibly sick.

In other words, no actionable crime was committed. That being the case, then why should the university get involved? Is there any evidence that universities getting involved in their students’ sex lives actually improves anything? Or does it just make them crazier (see mattress girl’s descent into amateur porn to try to stay branded).

  In the USSR, there was something similar to this phenomenon of lay prosecution of crimes. There were “comrade courts” where colleagues would get together and have meetings, presided by their bosses and the Communist leadership of their place of employment and together they would adjudicate cases involving small infractions.
  
  These comrade courts never messed with serious crime like rape, though. They concentrated on things like minor domestic disturbances, drunk and disorderly behavior, spousal cheating, etc.
  
  But handing over jurisdiction over rape to mock courts composed of lay passersby is a practice so bizarre that I don’t think I’ll ever be American enough to get it. I dread the possibility that one day somebody will try to push me into this sort of mock trial.

  Spoiled rich people are a world apart. I wouldn’t mind the strange ways they find to spice up their easy lives if they managed to stay away from self-pity and dumping on everybody else for being less rich and carefree.

    No comment on the romanticization of the past that makes no sense for the majority of people? Or the fact the husband is homeschooled?
    There’s nothing romantic about chamber pots, a lack of running water and polio. If I didn’t know better I’d assume it was some sort of weird fetish. At least, they don’t have children they mention.

      Yes, they are freaks. But this is one of the more inoffensive things rich people do to fill their empty lives. The wife of my state’s governor, for instance, makes herself feel important by promoting an organization that bullies pregnant Hispanic girls into not having abortions. I’d much rather she just pranced around in a stupid puffy dress instead, to be honest.

Well, as a former biologist, I care deeply about environmental issues and hope that countries investing in infrastructure can learn from the mistakes of already developed nations, by accounting for potential environmental damage in their plans. Mainland China’s severe air pollution issues, for instance, came as a result of a rush to modernize at the expense of the environment. But I agree there is nothing more obnoxious than to hear rich, developed nations scold poorer nations for attempting to catch up, especially when some of those developed nations don’t actually give a damn about the environment at all.

Ok, my last sentence isn’t accurate since it’s not a first-world government having an issue with the plan, but a US-based think tank. Still, the general idea stands: it’s off-putting to hear people from developed nations get righteous about the environment in developing nations. However, I find that the issues raised by the letter to be important ones, especially in reference to the overestimation of project benefits and the underestimation of project costs. Obviously, infrastructure needs to be a priority, but it should be possible to build infrastructure in a responsible, sustainable way. Surely one can urge that infrastructure plans take into account potential long-term issues (e.g., pollution) without being a cynic who wants to keep the rest of the world from having functional bridges and paved roads.
