A really brilliant Russian scholar says, “Oh, of course, Putin will get a great reception at the UN General Assembly. About 150 out of the 200 participating nations have no idea what Ukraine even is or where it is located but they are deeply convinced that the US is evil. They don’t often say it directly but everybody they perceive as being against the US is guaranteed their support. Putin’s success is not about Putin. It’s about the popularity of anti-American rhetoric.

Putin will not be contented, though. The opinion of these 150 representatives is of no value to him. He needs to be loved by the US.”

I agree with the first paragraph but not the second.

I can’t read Russian, no matter how brilliant the writer is, but I haven’t seen any evidence in the languages I can read that Putin has anything but unbridled contempt for America, as long as Obama is commander-in-chief.

And if I were a psychopath, I’d have to say that Putin’s assessment is correct.

Could part of this be Russians wanting revenge for the death of their dreams of an easy life (that the US represented)?

  I would not exaggerate the degree of Russian carefulness but yes, why wouldn’t he be happy? This means further destabilization in the region.
