Not That Into Work

Republicans – both in Congress and on the state level – have adopted the strategy of stopping all work altogether whenever anything is the least bit not to their liking.

Commentators are trying to come up with all sorts of political and ideological explanations for this phenomenon but I’m thinking that everything is much simpler: these folks are just not that into working and look for any excuse to avoid doing any work.

I tend to agree, US social relations have a cycle between more egalitarian and more status seeking times and currently status seeking is reaching a peak not seen since the gilded age. Part of that is servants and in a culture where servants are the norm the value of all work is degraded.

This also explains part of traditionally horrible American eating habits – cooking was associated with domestic labor so most people didn’t want to be stigmatized as being good at something that the hired help does. It was only when cooking could be re-configurated as a high class hobby that many Americans could interest themselves in how to make dinner.
