Halloween Decorations!

People down the road have really fantastic decorations. One house has an enormous spider on the wall, and the spider has flashing eyes and moves. I almost had a heart attack the first time I saw it. The spider is so big that it occupies half the outer wall!

The best Halloween decoration, though, is a wire pumpkin that is filled with little lights. From a distance, it looks like a ball of fire. I’ll buy one the moment I find it but for now, my Halloween decorations can be seen above. The most beautiful decoration is obviously the nature.

Your yard looks SPOOKY!

I have a question for you:

When I was stationed in Gurnee, IL in the early 1990’s, I was shocked to open my front door on the sunny Sunday afternoon three days before Halloween and find my adult neighbors and their kids standing there shouting, “Trick or treat!” (I hadn’t bought any candy yet, but fortunately had some fruit that the kids grudgingly accepted.)

I was told that the local custom was to do the “trick or treating” during DAYLIGHT on the SUNDAY before October 31st, because of safely concerns about traffic and kids out after dark. To me, this “safety-first” overkill seemed to be taking some of the fun out of the childish adventure.

When I was a child (long ago, I realize) the kids in my neighborhood would go “trick or treating” well after dark with no adults carefully hovering over us to protect us from the evils of the night. Someone we all survived.

Does your Illinois village have a similar “safety-first” “trick-or-treat” policy?

  When I was a kid our parents dropped us off in one place and pick us up in another at a prearranged time. We would have regarded daytime trick or treating (or having paretns too close by) as an insult to our dignity.

    People told me to prepare for seeing 2-3 adults per every child during trick or treating. These kids are transported more security than convicted criminals. 🙂

As I discovered last year to my horror, that’s exactly what was done. The Halloween was moved to an earlier day and time. We waited for trick-or-treaters for hours on the 31st, only to discover that the fun had been moved to an earlier day. I’m still confused as to why it was done.

There are literally few places in the world that are safer than this area. I have no idea what anybody can possibly fear around here. The biggest scandal the neighborhood has had in the entire time I’ve been living here was the not-so-sober Dad with his daughter last night.

People are way too paranoid.

  I’m sure you’ve seen the periodic news articles where U.S. parents have been arrested for letting their children walk to school alone, or even letting their children play outside on the front lawn while a parent is inside the house.

We were bemused while living in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands to find recommendations from neighbours that trick or treating be moved from Sunday 31st Oct to the day before to avoid upsetting those who religiously observed the Sabbath. In the event everyone’s kids went out both days and made out like bandits.
