Americans, I’ve had it with you, seriously. Once again, you’ve had to go and move Halloween? What’s wrong with doing it on October, 31? Why does it always have to be on a different date?

October 31 falls on a weekend this year. It can’t be inconvenient or whatever. Why? Why can’t I ever figure out when it will happen?

You’re not in the wrong country, Clarissa — you’re in the wrong STATE!

Why don’t you move to a civilized location like Arizona, where trick-and-treating is always done on October 31, and always after dark like it’s supposed to be?

This is insane! Every year I want to celebrate, I decorate the house, buy the candy, prepare to have fun, and every time they mess with it in some way.

At least, this year I’m not at work when the whole thing started. But half of the neighbors are at work or still on the commute.

That’s what you get for not checking this list first…

My village is not even on it.

To my knowledge, no one moved Halloween. They have tried to take much of the charm out of the holiday. Unfortunately, the only part of the country that really knows how to celebrate it properly is New England.

That’s true. I had some fantastic Halloweens back in New England. I wasn’t at the stage in my life where I greeted trick or treaters yet, but fun was had. 🙂

      Good times. . .

      “That’s true.”

Obviously, you Yankees have never visited Arizona on Hallowe’en night!

How can you do Halloween if it’s not cold? It can’t be the same thing without a biting, cold wind howling in the chimneys.

Oh, it gets cold this time of year — goes down to a bone-chilling 65 degrees overnight.

Besides, we have REAL tarantulas, scorpions, giant spiney cactuses and other plants that fight back, and mostly killer bees out here, so we don’t need fake Hallowe’en props in the yard!

Here’s one of our friendly Hallowe’en birds — notice that it’s even wearing a mask? (The bird is shrike, about the size of a large robin.)

And you, dear friend, haven’t spent Halloween in a New England village!

Well, I was stationed for five years at a military headquarters in North Chicago, IL — which was a far north as I EVER want to be in the winter! (The winters there were even worse than the deep-frozen ones in Germany, where I at least got to speak German and mingle with the local Mädchen.)

But you’re right, the Chicago area doesn’t qualify as New England.

Oh well. You can always celebrate Día de los Muertos which is still on November 2nd and teach the local residents something about Hispanic traditions.

There are definitely Dia de los Muertos celebrations every year in the Phoenix area, with lots of delicious Mexican food!
