    That only represents the number of people currently collecting unemployment. The total employed participation rate is still way down at 62% compared to 66% in 2008. http://data.bls.gov/timeseries/LNS11300000.

    Do they take into account that some people drop out of the workforce to go back to school?

    Because of access to affordable health care, you will see some retiring earlier.

    With the baby boomers retiring, I believe the labor participation rate will drop for a while.

    The population of the US is about 300 million. That includes children and retired people, who are obviously out of the work force.

      These are all very good points.

      Plus, women who had to work because their husbands were unemployed are now more free to choose to stay at home.
