The stupid leader of independence – minded Catalonians Artur Mas is so obsessed with his unhealthy need to be president of a country that he might just push the Spanish voters to come out for the horrible Popular Party in the next elections.
Spain is the unluckiest country ever. It just can’t get a break. Maybe this is the cosmic payment for producing the best literature in the world.
Would Spanish federal law allow the Catalonians to break away, even if that group approved a referendum on independence?

No. And herein lies the whole problem. Catalonians agreed to the 1975 constitution freely and very engaged in every step of its creation. The constitution is fairly recent. And now all of a sudden they say, “Screw the constitution” and want to break all agreements.
Spain paid an enormous price for this constitution and throwing it over now is a huge mistake.

My theory is still that “independence” is code for “allow us to steal very large amounts of money and then blame it on Madrid”. The pro-independence arguments are infantile and completely divorced from reality (Catalonia will inherit no debt from Spain! Spain will continue to pay Catalonian pensions!)
The EU has no interests in allowing Catalonia in right away (or in the near future) since it would encourage too many other breakaway regions and/or huckster nationalists looking for a country to run.
On the other hand, the EU has no desire for any country to be freed from the toxic wealth destroying Euro (I’d almost support independence if I thought it was a way for them to escape it).
But Ukraine is waaay unluckier than Spain. Not even close.
