Finally, a European feminist has woken up and noticed the horrifying story of the gang sexual assault over a thousand men committed against several dozen of women in Cologne.

Of course, the feminist in question dedicates more space to “a dilemma for those who support both women’s rights and refugee rights”, “anti-immigrant parties”, “anti-refugee sentiment”, and Germany being “a patriarchal country” than to analyzing what made this horrible crime possible. But at least women get a mention. That’s already enormous progress given how bored today’s feminists are with everything that has to do with women.

That’s already enormous progress given how bored today’s feminists are with everything that has to do with women.

Not to mention everything that has to do with Islamic perceptions of women and their consequent actions.

Surely you don’t think a Western feminist would dare discuss an issue involving Muslims without making certain that she’s checked off all the mandatory “intersectionality” squares…

So far, both people who commented at Echidne’s blog either do not believe it happened at all or was as bad as reported. The case was “blown out of proportion,” it is “dog-whistle,” the report is “dubious.” Check, if you don’t believe me.

Read this good article

For instance, loved this bit:

\ “The young men who come to Germany must begin working as quickly as possible,” he wrote. “Work socializes. It is about our national peace, which is threatened by the excesses in Cologne and the excesses in the Internet.” \

I also “loved” Henriette Reker’s (Cologne’s mayor’s) reaction:

\ [Ms. Reker] said that city officials would work to help women protect themselves and to explain the city’s attitudes and norms to newcomers.

“We will explain our Carnival much better to people who come from other cultures,” she said, “so there won’t be any confusion about what constitutes celebratory behavior in Cologne, which has nothing to do with a sexual frankness.” \

Rape and theft have nothing to do with a sexual frankness, but for some reason it is not said. Ms. Reker’s words only paint all refugees as complete criminals, who are too confused not to rape and steal.

The comments (NYT and Readers’ picks) were also interesting. For instance, is the following true about Canada?

\ The Canadians are not only compassionate, but very smart. They allowed only intact Syrian families and older people, no single males between the ages of 16 and 50. And now we see why. \

Another comment:

\ I’m German and live in Cologne for more than 15 years, and I’m sad and shocked that those disgusting crimes took place here. I want to point out two things: Yes, Cologne has for many years a problem with certain groups of young men from North Africa attacking people and dealing with drugs. But this has nothing to do with the 10.000 new refugees who came to Cologne in 2015. Not much has changend in town since they have arrived. I see some of them in the park where I go for a walk, round about 250 refugees live in a gym hall nearby. I see them sitting in the park, playing with their children, all friendly and calm. Terrible things happen and we must fight crime wherever it occurs, but we shouldn’t forget that every human being is an individual with an individual responsibility. \

Why has not police taken care of those North African gangs?

Also, some refugees arrived before 2015. Based on reports, I do not believe the attackers were not refugees at some point, whether in 2015 or before. Even if they arrived in 2001, their behavior raises questions regarding accepting more refugees.

  I also find it ridiculous that the story is being buried in discussions of who arrived when. What does it matter to the victims? What does it matter to women who have to live in an intolerable environment?
  
  As for Canada, the refugees who came over last month are far from being the first. Canada has been receiving Syrians, Algerians, Moroccans, Afghanis, Lebanese, etc for a long time. Irrespective of their religious beliefs, their presence has made life difficult for women who happened to live in neighborhoods with great numbers of these immigrants. I’ve been saying this for years and I’m just as disbelieved and dismissed as the women from Cologne. I’ve heard all of these excuses for years. I can recite them all by heart.

  Since Germany does not accept immigrants only refugees and asylum seekers now although they earlier accepted Gastarbeiter and Aussiedler as well it is definite that any North Africans legally in Germany arrived as refugees. There are no “immigrants” in Germany. The Syrians are refugees, the Turks are Gastarbeiter, the Russian Germans are Aussiedler and Spaetaussiedler. But, nobody what so ever is an immigrant in Germany. There is no such legal category.
