The linked article belongs to the swelling “I went to a Trump rally and felt superior, here is every boring detail of that inane experience” genre. The author tries to liven up his soporific piece with a dose of racial self-flagellation that is embarrassing to observe.
The illustration for the article couldn’t be more perfect, though — have you EVER seen a drawing that so accurately captures the overwhelming, self-loathing angst of a sensitive, superior, guilt-ridden white liberal?? Also, notice how the all-white man is totally surrounded by an all-black background…
I hope “The Guardian” paid the artist more than they paid the writer. The artist is the one with talent.

But Clarissa, he’s a white male Torontonian (he makes sure you know in the first paragraph) grateful for his universal health care so he can get his rash checked, and his freshman sociology classes so he can gawk at exotic American heartland poverty and hipsters.
