From a great article in The Atlantic on Obama’s last State of the Union address (that I didn’t watch):

The first thing that stands out is how the decline of economic terror has created space for other terrors.

This is so true. Rich societies that don’t remember what it means to have actual problems will always find a fresh tale of imaginary terror to titillate the sated consumers.

“Terrorism has returned to center stage not merely because of the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, but because fear of economic calamity no longer looms.”

Yes, if we were still frantic about our economic situation, we wouldn’t have the space to worry about all those “imaginary” deaths in Paris and California or those “imaginary” rapes in Germany.

Given that Paris and Cologne are not located in the US, thank you for making my point for me.

So Americans have no reason to be concerned about international acts of terrorism that don’t occur on U.S. soil? Your website has devoted a lot of space to those acts and their consequences for women — and men.

Concerned is one thing. Terrorized and apocalyptic is another.

I find it very boring and off-putting when people start getting all drama-queenish out of nowhere. I prefer intelligent, meaningful analysis and not the “everything is sooo hoooorrible” rantings.

What you see depends on where you sit. There are places in the country (some not far from St. Louis) where it’s a big deal to borrow $10 from a friend to muddle through the week and where people are too busy with their own issues to care about listening to politicians talk. I thought the main point of the Atlantic article concerned the forgotten ones conveniently omitted from both the SOTU address and the GOP response. These are the people who could elect Sanders and probably will elect Trump.

Vic, I thought we had already established that you informing me about poverty is a bit misplaced, remember?
