Today’s segment of Dr Phil features 4 adopted kids from Russia who were subjected to horrific abuse at the hands of adoptive American parents. Of course, there are also the 19 Russian adoptees killed by American adopters and the kids adopted specifically to be exploited sexually.

For all his faults, Putin was absolutely right to ban international adoptions. It was a vicious practice that kept resulting in death and abuse.

Trauma of international adoption (very real trauma) should be compared to the trauma of growing up in a Russian orphanage, and not with some hypothetical ideal situation that was not available to those children…
Also, motives are important, and Russia’s decision to ban international adoptions was not motivated by the care for those children, it was a counter-sanction for some sanction imposed on some Russian officials.

What about Russian adoptees abused and killed by Russian adopters? I wouldn’t be surprised to see higher rates of abuse than in American adopters.

That’s reason to organize the domestic system of adoption better, not sell off surplus kids to all kind of weirdo.

We all know how I feel about shuffling people around when they become inconvenient.

Why not do that (as if it’ll happen in Russia) and, in addition, organize the international system better so that max number of children will be raised in loving homes?

That’s impossible to do because Americans will never allow Russians to run all over the US supervising what happened to the adopted kids. Nobody supervises here in the US and kids end up being resold to multiple users through online listings.

This is precisely the reason why all sorts of crazies love international adoptions: there’s no supervision.

Yes. I agree with Clarissa completely here. There are many American children who need adopted parents so it’s not possible that they exhausted all domestic options. People who resort to international adoption tend to do it for unloving reasons (i.e. they only want a white baby.)

sure, but this was never a goal of the Russian authorities, the goal was to make a point in a PR game.

Oh, of course. But irrespective of the motivation, the result is good.
