Making a Difference in Education

Somebody donated $50,000,000 to Harvard. Of course, it’s people’s own business what to do with their money but it’s weird that somebody would want to give money to a place where it will be neither noticed nor appreciated.

We have community colleges and universities here in Illinois that will probably close down by the end of this year because of our governor’s insanity. If somebody chose to help one of them, this would be a way to make an impact, do something valuable.

Rauner, by the way, made clear that he will not honor the state’s promise of giving students in dire financial need the MAP grants they use to cover tuition. These are the most vulnerable young people in the state, and now they will not be able to continue their education.

It’s truly shocking how much damage a single deranged maniac like Rauner can cause.

That’s one of many reasons why it is critical to get involved in state politics. The lack of involvement by the majority is what lets “the inmates run the asylum.”

  That’s exactly what I was going to write next! There was an article in the NYTIMES yesterday about loss of interest in local politics. And that’s an enormous mistake. It’s important to elect the right president but that won’t save us from the damage inflicted by crooks like Rauner.

  Yep. Whenever people complain about the people in office, I always ask, “Did you vote?” Because these people did not get in by a coup d’etat–they were ELECTED. People went out and voted for them. I am always furious at those on the left side of the political fence who proudly blare out how they will not vote because of the “lesser of two evils is still evil” bull-pucky or the “both parties are the same!” nonsense, and yet start whining when the candidate who won because people on the other side voted en masse starts to wreck things.

    I agree 100% with Marc McKenzie. I’m getting so fed up with liberals refusing to vote because there are candidates “liberal enough” for them. So now we have completely destructive maniacs like Rauner and Walker in office. How is that any better than a slightly conservative Democrat?????

The guy you posted about is a piker compared to another “philanthropist, ” who donated FOUR HUNDRED million dollars to Harvard’s school of engineering back in June. Or course, Harvard promptly renamed its engineering department after him.

This amount of money would have done vastly more good to a much larger, more diverse group of people if these billionaires had simply paid them in taxes instead of writing them off as tax deductions.

But then, no one gets his/her picture in the national news or gets his/her name immortalized in at a famous university for paying taxes.

  Exactly. Harvard is a multi-billion dollar corporation. It doesn’t need donations.
