It seems like Bernie won. If that makes you unhappy, make sure you thank the Bush family for making the word “socialist” pleasing to many Americans.
Hillary seems to have won, after all. Interesting race!
Rubio is doing did unexpectedly well. Bleh.

Hillary loses Iowa if she loses and loses in a close victory because it’s so close and she’s the anointed one LOL.
Bernie wins if he loses because it’s so close and loses if he loses because if he can’t carry super white and rural people he’s not going to do better elsewhere.
Either way, nothing of import is happening tonight except O’Malley called it quits because it’s one thing to poll at 2% with twenty other people but with two other people it’s just embarrassing.

I don’t understand how it’s important that O’Malley is dropping out. I know you didn’t like him, but he was NEVER the slightest threat to either Bernie or Hillary, and never took a significant amount of votes from anybody. He’s always mattered as much in his primary as John Kasich has in his.

Yes, since the only realistic choice was between him and Trump. But I’m really happy about the fact that Rubio is a clear 3rd, so the Republicans now have a clear “establishment” (read: sane and electable) candidate to run against the potential Democratic candidates, one an unelectable socialist and the other with her feet anchored in the 1990s.
I am a bit disappointed that Bernie didn’t win the Demo primary in a landslide. 🙂

What about Rubio is “insane”? You may not like his moderately conservative political views, but he has a stable personality, is a mainstream typical politician — and he’s electable, with a good chance of beating Hillary.
Trump is a megalomanical sociopath. Cruz, while clinically sane, has unacceptably (to me) far-right views and is even more unlikable than Hillary, hence less likely to win if he gets the nomination.

“Sane” = “doesn’t scare or repulse the horses”. The fact he’s Tea Party makes him “moderate” right now. In life, as well as politics, we grade on curves and by comparison. He is the picture of mental health compared to say, Louis Gohmert. Or Michele Bachmann. See he doesn’t think women are engaging in birth tourism to commit long term international terrorism. He just thinks that a pump action shotgun is going to stop IS from invading his home.
Rubio looks eminently sane next to Donald Trump (R-Cheeto ™) and charming next to smarmbucket Cruz (R-Lizard).
Kasich (aka the Mayor from Buffy) is the only sane appearing person in the race and he hasn’t a snowball’s chance in hell.

In case you’re interested in a first person account from the caucus. My caucus site had almost 450 people and there were only five there for O’Malley. The undecided corner was three times bigger than the O’Malley group in the first round.
My precinct had ten delegates and we wound up splitting 50-50, five for Bernie and five for Hillary. The Hillary crowd was a little older than the Bernie crowd, but there were people of all ages on both sides, though older women (50s-70s) were 100% on the Hillary side. There aren’t a ton of blacks or Hispanics in my neighborhood, but the ones who turned out were there for Hillary. The Bernie side was mostly 20 and 30-somethings and 100% white.

Ohhh, that didn’t surprise me at all. I made a point to observe that at the caucus because it seemed to me over the past few weeks that the Bernie supporters were almost entirely middle and upper-middle class white people.

Rand Paul is a hopelessly out-of-date isolationist in a world at war. He reminds me of the sole member of congress — who was at the time the only woman ever elected to the U.S. legislature at a national level — who cast a vote against declaring war on Imperial Germany in World War I.

I don’t want any anti-Semitic comments on my blog, thank you. There are no “Israeli interests” any American politician ever cared about. Israel is a tiny country, entirely dependent on the US. The US defends its own interests through every interaction with Israel. Not seeing that I can only be a result of wilful blindness and prejudice. What’s next? We will seriously discuss “the Israeli lobby”?

A few thoughts before actually trying to catch up.
For the republicans the Iowa caucuses are essentially meaningless. They have a terrible track record of picking the eventual nominee (and mostly only do so when he is an incumbent).
What’s interesting is that this republican nominee race is shaping up as a battle not between candidates but between the party establishment and their own voters. If anyone but Trump is the nominee (unless something drastic happens) the party could be done for or contract into Evangelical only as the non-Bible-crazy faction leaves.
For the democrats it’s important to remember that left leaning media hates Clinton almost as much as the extreme right does. I’m assuming one reason Sanders is doing as well as he is is that the media keeps pushing him up to punish Clinton.
Sanders has a very bad shot as national candidate. Black voters might go out to the polls for Hillary (esp if Obama puts aside his distaste for her and stumps for her) but they’ve never (collectively) shown any loyalty for white northern liberals and Sanders is the whitest northernest liberal imaginable.
Just had an insight – will share it in a separate post after thinking about it for a few minutes….

Thank you for saying this! Nobody else seems willing to admit how hard MSNBC and the bloggers are campaigning against Hillary. It’s like they’ve gone completely bonkers. Yesterday’s MSNBC coverage was a pep rally for Bernie.

MSNBC has been a farce for years. Smug liberals love to laugh at Fox News (which clearly has a conservative bias), but at least Fox usually has an (admittedly outnumbered) Democratic on its panels. MSNBC panelists are 100% left-wing, and most of the time they simply giggle and ridicule Republicans (and apparently also Hillary).
Do you know that Microsoft (The “MS” part of “MSNBC”) ended its partnership with that network several years ago, but allowed the network to keep the initials?

I have started to watch both Fox News and MSNBC one after another because moving between them allows to figure out approximately what is going on.

I recommend watching CNN as well. CNN has a Democratic-leaning bias, but overall it’s the most balanced of the three main political channels.
