Maternity Wear Life Hack

Maternity clothing is notoriously hideous and scratchy but this winter season a new endearing quality was added to it. Whenever I’d go to a maternity clothes store and try on a sweater, I’d discover that it’s transparent.

The number of see-through winter clothes for pregnant women I tried this Fall and winter was so huge that I have to conclude this is some kind of a fashion trend these days. And mind you, these clothes were so dowdy and plain that there is no likelihood they were aimed at pregnant 16 – year-olds who want to shake their pregnant bellies at passers-by.

The only solution (other than sinking a fortune into beautiful and expensive European maternity wear) is to rely on plus-sized clothing. In the US (unlike in Canada where plus-sized clothing does not exist, unlike plus-sized women), you can actually find pretty, comfortable clothes in larger sizes that are kind enough to accommodate pregnant bellies.

I was so successful in finding nice stuff in the plus-size section that nurses at the doctor’s office told me they were looking forward to my appointments because they loved seeing my stylish outfits.

So this is a pregnancy life-hack: forget maternity wear and head straight to the plus size section of the clothing store.

Yes! I did the same thing. Because I never had the “bump” shape (aka basketball under the shirt), maternity pants with the stretchy panel never fit correctly. With both pregnancies, I just sort of generally expanded. So plus size tops and elastic or drawstring waist pants and skirts were great. And more stylish and generally less expensive.

I don’t know why they keep pushing transparent and very thin pieces of clothing to “layer.” They’re never tailored in any way. Unless you are very young and thin and very standard-sized (read “not tall/petite/boobs of any significant size”) it doesn’t read as carefree, it just reads as “sloppy.”I have no interest in trying to match my bra with a cami with a thin layer on top so I don’t look like I’m exposing half my sternum to the entire world, which is always fun when almost everyone is taller than you. It doesn’t make me want to buy more things; it just makes me put it back on the rack.
I hold on to my old winter clothing until I can’t wear it any more and stick to a very plain non patterned palette with the same silhouettes because of these irritating trends of calculated sloppiness.
