It’s a blunder, I believe, to recruit Mitt Romney to make speeches and record robocalls against Trump. Trump’s whole campaign revolves around the idea of “we don’t win anymore; we need to start winning again.” To most people in this country Romney is known for nothing other than losing to Obama. He’s one of those losers Trump talks about. Unleashing him against Trump only strengthens the idea that the party leadership is in thrall to losers who hate Trump for not being one of them.

The instant I heard that Romney was going to make a speech I knew it would be a failure and it would not change anyone’s mind. The content was almost irrelevant.
I’m confused as to what Romney gets out of this. He’s not high principled enough to care about “the good of the party.”

I think Romney likes the image of a wise elder everybody defers to. His ego surely took a beating in the 2012 election and feeling relevant must be attractive.

I think that is it.
There’s nothing that people with money like more than to feel important and relevant. If they’ve gotten successful doing X it’s so obvious they are eminently qualified to do Y and Z. Please refer to Bill Gates’ and Mark Zuckerberg’s disastrous forays into the field of education. Like, why the fuck would anyone listen to these hacks on something they have no knowledge or expertise in?
Just money isn’t enough. They also want a ‘legacy’. Ugh.
Just lol @ Romney. Groveling for birther-in-chief Trump’s endorsement in 2012 and now pearl-clutching at the sight of Trump discussing his penis. You and other mainstream republicans created him. Now time to pay the piper.

Maybe he gets schadenfreude out of it? The need to pander to the Repub establishment (and evangelicals) helped torpedo his electability and now he knows he’ll be ineffective but likes the irony of doing harm while the repub establishment is to stupid to realize their particular gig is up?
Just hypothesizing.

There’s always the possibility of the convention turning to him in the event of a deadlock. The GOP is divided between Main Street and Wall Street. The former blame most of their problems on immigrants and free trade and like farm subsidies. Conversely, big companies like cheap labor and free trade and blame problems on government spending. Both are largely wrong, but there is no easy way to reconcile those positions into a unified party. The GOP has danced around this chasm for years, but now its front and center.
