It’s raining today, the sky is overcast, and there is no sun. I can’t tell you, people, how happy this kind of weather makes me. I’m not only more energetic and happy but literally smarter.
Klara perceives my mood and sleeps more calmly than she ever has.
I’m wondering if my hatred of the sun might have a medical cause. Is it possible I have some sort of a vitamin E allergy? Or is it vitamin D? I don’t know anybody else who dislikes the sun as much as I do.
The sun provides vitamin D. Are you photosensitive at all? That might account for much of it. If you’re like me and burn even in the shade, that could play a role. Or maybe it’s because you prefer the cold, and the sun is such a large heat source?

Sun sensitivity and allergy is also a thing, though the sensitivity is more common. For me, at least, sun sensitivity means very bad burns that sometimes blister, bright red bumps on my hands and arms that look like small bug bites (sun bumps), photosensitivity, and sunburn on the whites of my eyes. Also it sets off my rosacea, which turns my face bright red. This only tends to happen when it’s very hot, though.

Yes, I burn very easily.
I feel like the sun does something to my eyes. Maybe I’m a vampire.

It took me over a decade of living in southern california to start somewhat liking the sun. It gets very very hot in my part of India, with temperatures routinely in the 110s in the middle of summer. Growing up, ‘sunny outside’ quickly became associated with ‘not allowed to play outside’. I think that’s where the hate comes from.
I love overcast days so much it’s not even real. My girlfriend who grew up in rainy, muggy Oregon tells me I’d hate overcast days if I had to live in that climate day in day out, but I don’t believe her.

It’s good to know I’m not alone in my strangeness! Everybody seems to be such a sun worshipper.

I also love rain and overcast days. Many people tell me I am nuts. It reminds me of the beginning of school year (yey!) and the end of endless summers (I was always bored out of my wits).
I have very fair skin and do get a sun rash on my cleavage, but it’s not bad. Sun seems to mean that I have no excuse not to go outside, like I absolutely have to do it. And I hate doing anything I have to do.
I really love rain. I spent much of my youth soaked to the bone, as I liked to get wet from the rain any chance I could.
I keep lobbying to move to Oregon or Washington, but DH hates rain. 😦

My husband is also a huge fan of sun and warmth. What kind of a Russian doesn’t tolerate cold, I ask?

It’s also possible that you have a moderate magnesium deficiency, which would tend to make you more light sensitive, susceptible to migraine headaches, and tending toward avoiding the sun enough that you might also have a moderate vitamin D3 deficiency …
I had this problem for a while — a quick trip to Holland & Barrett for some sea salt magnesium capsules and some patience did the trick. 🙂

It’s a good thing none of you loathers-of-beautiful-weather live in Arizona — you wouldn’t last 24 hours out here! 🙂

I lived in AZ for 5 years! I actually liked it there a lot; I have a thing for deserts, cacti, and snakes. (My first kid was born in Mesa, AZ). DH says it’s too hot there. I would actually rather go to AZ than live in the winter wonderland where I am now.
I dislike all the humidity and bugginess that accompanies spring and summer outside of the southwest. I really do dig AZ scorching summers and the fact that you don’t have to own a coat and that the roads are beautiful (’cause there is no snow, obvs). I would appreciate them having better public schools and a more democratic populace, though! 😉

I also love overcast and rainy days. Snowy days are my absolute favorite, but thunderstorms and gloom come in a close second.
I’m with you on the bright sunny days — they make my eyes hurt, and I just want to stay inside with the shades down and the AC cranked high.
