Everybody has been telling me that OB-GYNs take months to give new patient appointments, so I should call now, today, immediately, as soon as possible, fast, fast, fast. In my experience, it does take months, so I called. And ended up being given an appointment for this Friday.

Does anybody know what people with infants do when they have to go to doctors’ appointments? I don’t have a babysitter yet, and I’m not even remotely ready to get one. Will they kick me out if I show up with Klara? I was planning to figure this out by July when I thought I’d get the appointment. But I’ll have no solution before Friday.

And while I’m at it, if a person wants to take a small baby into a store or a supermarket, how does she transport the baby inside the store? In a car seat? Do people put car seats inside shopping carts?

Maybe I should finally try one of those baby-wearing contraptions. I just hope they are not illegal around here because I never saw one on anybody.

I’m only an observer, but my sense is that you can take your baby (in a carseat is good) into a doctor’s appointment as long as it’s safe without your attention right then. (Thus, a small baby in a carseat is pretty safe, but a two year old isn’t likely to sit still that way.)

I see people at the store all the time with babies in car seats, often put into or propped on a grocery cart or shopping cart (or whatever they’re called in your part of the country.

I can’t imagine a baby-sling or whatever is illegal anywhere except driving in a car or something where a specific safety measure is specified.

I took my infant to my doctor and dentist appointments, in that car seat I hated (so unweidly). He was usually stashed in some corner, where he hung out quietly. It is when they won’t just lie there that you have to find someone to watch them for medical and similar appointments. You have a few months yet. In the meantime, the women at the front desk will enjoy cooing at Klara, such a nice break in their day.

And yes, car seats fit in shopping carts. Of course that cuts down on the amount of groceries you can fit in the cart. Still, easier than when they are big enough to sit in the cart by themselves and interested in climbing out, or busy removing their shoes and dropping them when you aren’t looking and you don’t notice until three aisles later.

Most car seats for babies as small as Klara have notches so that you can brace them in the front part of the shopping cart — where she’ll be sitting when she learns how to sit.

And yep, just haul her along to the doctor’s office in the car seat. That’s why they’re detachable: they make excellent baby buckets.

Well… excellent. They’re actually very heavy and awkward to haul. But! Once you get where you’re going, they’re handy for stowing the baby in various places safely.

Been there, done that, bought the t-shirt. Take the baby to the doctors. They are used to this. However, you need to make it clear to N that he is on call for emergency child care. That’s part of he job of being a father in this day and age. Whether his company gives paternal leave or not, they need to make allowances for his family obligations. If this isn’t clarified now, there will be problems in the future.
