More Reading Stoppers

Here is another new expression that makes me stop reading or listening: “a biological woman / man.” Given that “man” and “woman” are biological categories, the expression makes as much sense as “buttery butter.”

I’m all for word creation but it has be meaningful and not stupid.

  1. If you think “man” and “woman” are biological categories, you obviously haven’t kept up your reading at the Shakesville blog.

    1. Actually, no, I haven’t, you are right. But I absolutely insist that these are biological categories, and that’s an indisputable fact of objectively existing reality. When people start denying reality, craziness ensues.

  2. How did “intersectional” miss the cut? Is it still a thing?

What about headlines? I pretty much refuse to read any article whose headline talks down to me like a small child.

“Situation X is happening. Here’s why”

“X number of things you need to know about Situation Y”

and the like make my teeth hurt. No way am I wasting time reading them.

    1. Since intersex people are a tiny minority, it hardly makes sense to modify such generalized terms as man / woman only to preserve constant reminders of their existence.

  3. OMG I THINK I’M HAVING A PLEONASM

[moves away from the “buttery butter”, and hopes that the pleonasm will stop quickly and rapidly whilst being less buttery and buttered]

    OH NO … 🙂
