The hospital where I gave birth was evacuated today and the highway leading to it was shut down for hours because some people saw an abandoned duffel bag and a cell phone with wires and reported a possible bomb threat. A really creepy looking robot was brought in to inspect the suspicious objects, creating a panic among mental health patients. It turned out there was no bomb but people are understandably nervous.
This is an environment where people can end up voting nervously and fearfully.
Around 25 years ago I was among the passengers who had just taken their seats in a full airliner at LAX when the stewardess announced that someone had called in a bomb threat, and we would all have to leave the plane until it was inspected and cleared for flight.
The stewardess’ tone was one of annoyance — no fear in her voice at all — and all the passengers just groaned loudly before we leisurely evacuated the plane. None of us were the least bit worried that the threat might be real.
How times have changed.

Hah. It would be interesting if at least one of those “Muslim fanatics” turned out to be a practicing Muslim. But no, it’s always some boozing, whoring fellow who doesn’t know the Koran from his favorite gay dating app.

From what I can tell, the violent crazies are usually recent re-converts.
New converts are almost always more zealous than those more established in a religion and the re-converted are a class unto themselves (as the old saying goes, there’s nothing worse than a reformed drunk).
In a far different context, writing about the Promise Keepers in the 1990s, Florence King once wrote about the Southern Baptist re-convert known as “Earl, who just got saved” (an annual event for some men in the South).
