A Bad Poet

So I got a blog roll, right? It’s an app that brings together the recent articles from all websites I’m interested in. For a reason I will never find out, the app decided to deliver one of the blogs I read in an unusual format. The app would take the first couple of sentences or the title and subtitle of an article and arrange them to look like a little poem. It would look something like this:

On the last day

of the Democratic convention

Clinton will deliver

a long-awaited speech.

For years, I’d read this and think, “Wow, this guy is a really shitty poet. Why does nobody tell him to quit?”

Finally today I could take it no longer. I went to the blog to tell the author to stop writing bad poetry.

And that’s when I discovered that the fellow wasn’t writing poetry. The app was simply making it look like that.

I’m now wondering if it’s just me who’s having this problem with the fellow’s blog. What if there are many people out there who curse him for bad poetry he doesn’t write?

  1. Hey, what you wrote is no worse than the free-verse “poetry” that The Atlantic magazine actually pays some authors for.

At least your “poem” contains complete sentences that make sense.

I would tell him since if you’re right, many people may not curse but simply stop reading his blog.

In other news, I was shocked by this (notice the dog angle, the ultimate insult in Muslim world, don’t tell it wasn’t intentional):

Turkey creates ‘traitors’ cemetery’ for dead coup plotters

Alongside a makeshift dog shelter—whose volunteers are incensed at the proximity—Turkish authorities have made a dishonorable final resting place for those branded as traitors undeserving of a proper burial.

Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs issued a directive denying funeral prayers and services for those who died while trying to overthrow the government.

After reading this, I think Erdogan himself deserves to be buried with dogs. Literally.

  3. Regarding Goodreads, before I forget again – I have wanted for a while to recommend the play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry. Without giving too much away,

\ The story tells a black family’s experiences in the Washington Park Subdivision of Chicago’s Woodlawn neighborhood as they attempt to “better” themselves with an insurance payout following the death of the father. The New York Drama Critics’ Circle named it the best play of 1959.

I loved the characters and especially the grandmother, who reminded me of a Soviet grandmother (in a good way, don’t worry). If you have read the play, would love to hear whether you liked it. If not, do try.
