I think we can all agree that I’m not an ultra-liberal of any sort. There are issues on which I’m to the right of Hillary Clinton, for Pete’s sake. But whenever anything political is discussed by fellow academics at my institution (unionization, the budget, Rauner, etc), I feel like some super-duper militant progressive who is about to run away and join the Black Panthers or the Weather Underground Organization.
So if among this crowd even I look like Bernie Sanders’s hippie sister, what does this tell us about the crowd?
You are dealing with a classic Midwestern crowd. Progressives were Wisconsin, not the rest of the Midwest and even that link seems broken now. Innovation was Chicago. (Downstate Ohio, Indiana and Illinois sympathized with the slave holders in the Civil War.) Like my mother, you can follow the path of being the holdout for sanity and truth, but in that place, you have to expect to be alone sometimes.

Yes, absolutely, there is a feeling of loneliness that I keep experiencing. I can’t wait to go to a conference to feel like I’m amongst my own kind for a change.
