Another annoying thing is the need to get copyright permissions for the use of quotes. This is a scholarly book. I will get no profit from it. It is written in English, so it will bring the names of Spanish writers whim nobody in the English-speaking world even knows about to the attention of a few American scholars. That’s all it will do. Why should there even be the issue of copyright restrictions?

Ideally, copyright is a good idea, but the laws are so corrupted now that they have no real moral or ethical standing. It’s just brute force in legal clothing.
Whatever happened to fair use? I know the copyright lobby has been trying to have the idea erased for years or decades. Have they succeeded?

I can use under 300 words total. But this is in depth analysis, so I always exceed 300 words.

Whether it sucks or not, that’s the law.
Copyright laws enabled a grouchy Irving Berlin to to keep academics who published scholarly books about American music from quoting any lines of his famous songs, and those same laws enable Martin Luther King Jr.’s family to charge exorbitant fees to academic publications and even newspapers that want to quote excerpts from his public speeches.
Whether the publisher receives any financial gain from the quotes is irrelevant.
