A Belated Awakening

The European Parliament has finally woken up and adopted a non-legislative resolution about the need to resist Russian propaganda. The resolution points out that an army of Kremlin propagandists tries to drive a wedge between the EU and the US and break up the EU.

This is a big deal and long overdue. Nobody in the US and the EU – including yourself – realizes how much of their news, including during the recent US election, came from the Kremlin’s propaganda machine.

People will keep repeating, “Nah, this isn’t happening, you are simply obsessed with Putin and you are imagining things” as they sit among the smouldering ruins of the EU overrun by far-right governments. They will keep telling me I’m paranoid while an ultra-conservative oligarchy demolishes the last remnants of the American democracy.

It’s funny, really. People who were faithful Reaganites back in the 1980s tell me sincerely that RT is a reliable news source. How incredibly easy did it turn out to be to get them eating right out of the (former) KGB hand.

The Russian media are not the European Union’s only, or even principal, problem. Indeed, the public (as distinguished from EU bureaucrats) are coming to realize that essentially uncontrolled immigration is a big problem.

    Wouldn’t that mean Dan is right? People are becoming increasingly concerned about EU and US migration policies. Wouldn’t that mean on this issue Russian media is as you put it “exacerbated an existing issue” not being the root of the problem?
    
    Now Erdogan is using the EU’s weak migration policies to black mail the EU by threatening to let in even more refugees. Now more fuel is added to the fire.

      In a couple of European countries, at least, immigration is an actual issue. In the US, however, it’s a joke. But hey, if American voters feel they have no problems more serious than this non-existent issue of “immigration policies”, what do I care? Let them waste their lives on this silliness. If I get a tax discount while they are getting slapped with more taxes and get their entitlements taken away, it’s their problem. At least, they will have a big shiny wall to console them.

Living in the EU I really don’t think Putin/Russia created the rightwing popularist movements but they clearly detected a change in wind direction a long time before those in charge of the EU (or member states) did and decided to run with it.

  And the US Liberals are so reluctant to accept any whiff of the Cold War coming back that they will deny the obvious until it’s too late.

    As you said of Okkupert, the European decision making class will put up with any inconvenience or humiliation to avoid admitting that there are problems (unless they can propose ‘closer intergration’ as a solution – which no one is really buying anymore).

  Yes, that’s the really scary part. Putin’s idea of the Russian World is that it exists everywhere that Russian speakers live. And Russian troops are entitled to go wherever Russian speakers are to “protect” them. Like Syria where there are a couple of expats from Russia.
