Yes, Trump will build his border wall. Most of it is already built.
Instead of the constant “OMG, how could he say that!” during the campaign, we should have heard non-stop that the wall is mostly there already, that the Obama administration has been deporting illegal immigrants faster than anybody else, that the number of illegal immigrants stopped growing back in 2010.

And it’s not like anybody ever tried to present a convincing argument why the wall is a bad thing. There was nothing done in response to the promise of a wall but scandalized, prissy pearl-clutching.

If people want the wall and it’s mostly there already, then why not play to that and give them what they want?

“Prissy pearl-clutching” is a good way to describe it.

Though I don’t agree with the border wall, there was never an argument made about why it was a bad idea — according to the losing left, it was just self-evident that you were totally and unconscionably racist if you even expressed an iota of support for the wall. This despite the fact that many who supported it were themselves Mexican immigrants. (The left seems to believe in self-racism a lot these days.)

That Obama deported about the same number of illegal immigrants that Trump has promised to is something that most of the losing left can’t even seem to hear, as they demand we worship Obama on his way out the door.

Another thing I find perplexing is that most of the American left seems to have no clue that most of the rest of the world’s immigration restrictions are much, much harsher and stronger than the US’s are — good luck ever becoming a Mexican of French citizen, for instance.

I am far more radical than 99.9% of the American left to be clear. I did not and do not support Trump. But I am part of a militant wing of the left that most people can’t even conceive of so invariably the pigeonholes I end up stuffed into are comically incorrect.

May be, they feared that such tactics would lead to many Democratic voters staying at home or switching to some third party?

Because build the wall is code for let Trump’s cronies do something useless on a government contract, and more importantly for let’s have open season on persons of color generally

I always thought of the “wall” as Trump’s campaign to get no-bid government contracts for companies he owns or that would give him a kickback. I thought of it as something he kept saying that sounded good and played well because it’s concrete and people liked the idea of making “Mexico pay for the wall.”

This is before I went and googled the >the Wall several months ago. All of the repetitive pearl clutching was over

They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
