I’m teaching a course on literature of the crisis (known on this blog as the erosion of the nation-state by liquid capital) next semester. But all of the texts I’m putting on the syllabus are not the ones that I analyze in my book. Because I don’t want to be boring to myself.
There will be essay, theater, poetry and short story of the crisis. No novels because I don’t make students buy books.
Wanted to ask whether you know good English novels on the topic.

El: I’ve been meaning to suggest this novel for you…..Have you heard of Daniel Deronda by George Eliot? It was published in 1876 and is quite long. But it’s a classic novel and deals with Zionism and includes several Jewish/Hebrew characters. It also comments on nationhood and national identity and has a super interesting subplot about a sensationalized female character. Given what you seem to be interested in, I think you would love it.

I have once tried reading “Daniel Deronda,” after liking “The Mill on the Floss,” but stopped in the middle. (Have read “Silas Marner” later and liked it too.) May be, I should try again.
