One of Trump’s nominees for a federal judge position, couldn’t answer the most basic questions about the US justice system. He wasn’t even familiar with the term “motion in limine”, known to anybody who has watched Law & Order.

Before anybody rants against Trump, though, I want to remind them that Trump didn’t start the trend where possession of the “correct” ideology is being preferred to professionalism and competence. He’s just surfing the wave created by others. It’s easy to exorcise the guilt by blaming its cause on the shadow.

Collective shadow, my ass.

This is not a question of ” ‘wrong’ ideology but professional and competent.” This freak is neither competent nor professional.

And please, Trump is not riding some “trend” because he and his wastrel children never had to prove “professionalism” or “competency” in the first place since inherited wealth and nepotism have been around….forever.

If you want to see the shadow in action (“look at those incompetent ‘unqualified’ people, I am more qualified”) look at how Trump and the GOP pick incompetent minorities to be their tokens. See: Sarah Palin, Ben Carson, Omarosa.

  For years, in academia we have had to put with unqualified and unprofessional people of exactly this kind whose only skill is to recite the approved ideology at us, all bug-eyed and censorious. The only thing that is different is the actual ideology. It would be great if the takeaway from this was that we need to stop doing this. But no, the takeaway, as always, is Trump is evil and we walk on water.

    For years, in academia we have had to put with unqualified and unprofessional people of exactly this kind whose only skill is to recite the approved ideology at us, all bug-eyed and censorious.
    It doesn’t work that way outside of academia (I thought academia was high on credentials) and certain well funded think-tanks and media organizations.
    
    Of course, with the right wing, if your talking point is “Government is bad and incompetent so let’s shrink it” this is the logical endpoint, since incompetence is a positive qualification. The mistake is assuming the message was “Government is bad and incompetent (but we can do it better).”
    
    Why would you keep the size of the government the same
    or increase it if government is incompetent? Who else would fill the stead of the void the “incompetent” government is leaving behind? What would that actor define as “competence” and “incompetence?”
