What I really, really hate is when (extremely progressive, I ❤️ Bernie type) Americans ask me in a voice dripping with fake concern and condescension, “But why would you and N want to become US citizens? This is such a horrible country right now.”
In the worst cases, they add, “I’d just stay European, if I were you.”

Well, really, until Trump was elected all of the progressives loved Russia. As I recall, Mitt Romney was mocked for weeks after he said we should be keeping an eye on Russia during his presidential campaign.

That’s true. Only now there’s a very begrudging admission that maybe Russia is not uniformly amazing. And it’s not a uniform admission either. See the recent The Nation.

Consumerist citizenship, really. Although I have to note that, while they claim their own citizenship to be so last year’s fashion, really, they sure are hanging on to it.

Tell then the truth: THAT IF YOU CAN’T VOTE IN AMERICA, THEN YOU HAVE NO VOICE!
Without the vote — which is the ONLY way to bring about political change in this country — they’re nothing but helpless observers, individuals without power swept in whatever direction the prevailing winds of the citizens who do possess the vote force them.
That may sound harsh, but it’s true: Become a U.S. citizen, and take charge of your destiny through the ballot box like every other American, or accept the outsider’s fate that others impose on you and your family.

Oh goody.
Does this idiot not realize there’s a stampede of people trying to naturalize because of this administration? [Of course there’s lots of naturalization anyways, but…] Over and over again, we’re told that only citizens have constitutional rights. [Not actually true, but it’s a very common misconception people act on]. It’s not like it’s a quick process.

The federal government can’t be bothered to keep track of their own records, so people will be forced to reapply for citizenship? This is such nonsense. Definitely a step towards making even citizenship an entirely liquid concept that can be revoked at the government’s pleasure.

I don’t understand why it doesn’t freak more people out. Not all countries allow dual citizenship. His was a country that doesn’t. In order to apply for citizenship here he had to renounce his home country. So does it mean the dude is stateless?
