This evening I was at Target and overheard a family in which the mother spoke in Chinese and the little boy answered in English. And this is NOT a neighborhood where there’s a stigma against speaking Chinese. But the kid knows that English is what he should speak.

More like English is the language of the playground (which always trumps whatever mom and dad or the school might like).
I’ve heard the parents speaking one language and kids answering in another a number of times. One of the weirdest was in the Netherlands when the adults were speaking Dutch and the kids were answering in American… I wondered how that came about and assumed it might have been a case of returning home after a spell spent abroad and the kids hadn’t yet re-acclimated (or emigrants visiting home in the summer and the kids just didn’t have active Dutch skills anymore)

Congratulations, Clarissa, you’re raising a true American patriot! But I’m surprised that kindergarten classes still include the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.
