It took me until page 386 to figure out that the characters in Bykov’s novel are based on famous historical figures in Stalin’s USSR. And such fascinating figures.

After reading your reviews, I have loaned the book and started reading it too. So far, only 3 chapters in. It does seem better, more readable than his other novels I looked at.
Don’t have historical knowledge to recognize people from Stalin’s USSR, but if you mention their names, will be glad to google and be able to better understand the novel.
As for the list of Russian literature you posted, quite a few books looked fascinating.

The second part is based on the story of Samuil Gurevich, the husband of Tsvetaeva’s daughter Ariadna. Muretta is Gurevich’s wife Shuretta.
