People are saying there should be a Dem primary because Biden is too old.

OK, but who would the candidates be? You need somebody with a national name recognition or somebody who massively appeals to African Americans. Biden had both, and he barely squeaked out a win.

In this game, it’s a lot less important to be liked than to be recognized.

Personally, I’m voting for whoever offers the best, the fastest and the most aggressive aid to Ukraine. There’s nothing that matters to me on the ballot in the US. I wish there were but nobody cares about anything serious at the domestic level.

    Trump has been discussing he important economic issues in a way I haven’t seen from Desantis, which is why I’m inclined to support him in that primary. On the rare occasion Desantis mentions something other than “wokeness,” it’s to come out against tariffs on China or something dumb like that. Of course, the media is uninterested in covering any of this when there’s very important fights about pride parades going on.

    You could do a lot worse than being a single issue Ukraine voter for the time being. I myself am feeling conflicted by how many Republicans are getting stupid on this issue. Keep an eye on the Ohio Senate primary in 2024; you’ll definitely want to be rooting for establishment toadie Frank LaRose, rather than Bernie Moron-o (you may gather that I don’t like either candidate.)

    They’ll probably run Newsom, because they haven’t got any other ideas. That or we’ll get an animatronic Biden stand-in.

    And as far as the Dems go, they have nothing, of course. Biden is going to be the nominee and they may as well accept it.

      Absolutely nothing. I have no idea why it’s so hard to find people under the age of 80 with ideas and a capacity to run. There’s no better evidence of the complete philosophical defeat of liberalism.

    …of course, there’s also the outside chance that RFK jr will do to the Democrats this round, what Trump did to the Republicans. The press is already so offended by him that they’re giving him free publicity. That’ll be interesting to watch.

      Even I don’t know who he is, let alone normies. Trump was a TV star. I don’t think the acronym guy would have an impact.

        He’s part of the Kennedy clan. That’s pretty good, name-recognition wise. But perhaps it doesn’t work for younger people.

        I also think he isn’t offering anything Democratic voters are craving. The people who like him best are Republicans. People will recognize the Kennedy name though.

    I am afraid something will happen with Biden and they will try to run Harris for president. I’m not sure what’s going on with her, but she just seems VERY loopy every time I happen to see her on TV. Like she’s had a couple of glasses of wine or took a double dose of some meds. I do not understand why Biden picked her to be VP, her run in the primary was completely underwhelming.

      I rather thought she was picked for him…. silicon valley was totally behind her before her extreme lack of voter appeal kicked in and she called off her campaign before it even really began….

      I trust silicon valley less than a box full of rattlesnakes…..

        Silicon Valley: They’ve all been dropping acid and talking to questionable astral entities since the 50s. Depending on your philosophical biases, I think we can safely assume they’re either carrying out orders directly from Satan, or just high on their own messiah complexes. Either way, anything they want, politically, should probably be sealed in a lead box and tossed into the ocean.

          Tech culture seems to bring out the worst in people. I know a couple who both have tech undergrad degrees, MBAs in tech management, and years of work in various tech management positions. Neither has ever worked in Silicon Valley, but they are both convinced that they are experts in everything. They are nice in many ways, but they are wildly confident in their opinions on every possible subject and it’s hard not to roll your eyes when one of them goes off on something that I actually know something about. Often it’s things where I wouldn’t consider myself an expert, but I know enough to know that they know far less than I do.

            There are many situations where brute force computational techniques can replace specialized academic knowledge. An obvious example is Google translate replacing specialized translation software. Even more so seems to be the trend of AI replacing physics models in engineering software.

              Ohhh, I am not questioning the power of tech to solve problems and do useful things in new ways. But simply being a person who works in tech does not automatically make someone an expert in education, medicine, various aspects of business, foreign relations, military strategy, monetary policy, etc. The tendency to have a confident opinion on everything is not limited to people in tech, but I think the tech culture tends to amplify it in people who already lean that way.

      Democrats are shrewd. They have zero policies to offer that the voters want. There’s absolutely nothing they’ve got that’s attractive or even just marginally sane.

      So they attached to Ukraine’s cause which has massive support. Republicans could have easily done that but as always they are reactive not proactive.

      We are seeing here a law that governs our individual lives, too. Passivity loses. An active engagement with the world wins.
