Proofs Are Here

Folks, you’ve got to see this. This a random page from the proofs of my new Ukrainian book:

How pretty is this?

Very.

And so fast! I’ve never seen anybody work this incredibly fast. When the editor told me they’ll have the book out by the end of the year, I thought he was… embellishing. But no, these are very serious people.

I’m so psyched.

  1. Dear Clarissa, thank you for this encouraging news.

I find it particularly heartening to know that somewhere the values of civilisation are not dead, while (almost) everywhere else such values are every day decried, belittled and despised.

And to know that the very same people who are strenuously defending such values daily, are doing so in the midst of gigantic hardship and against all odds, is even more uplifting and inspiring. It gives me hope that not all may be lost for Europe, and if Ukrainians are doing all this while their country is at war, we must all do more in our “little lives” in the fight to uphold those values (…”these fragments” we “must shore against” our “ruins”).

  2. This is what you should expect for proofs, that’s the entire point.

Note to lazy editors (and publishers): proofs are NOT an additional proofreading phase, and if you are doing this, YOU are the problem, not your authors.

The page proofing process is for the author to correct problems involving the conversion of the edited, proofread, and otherwise mutually approved text to a set of typeset pages.

The in-house editors should also check the proofs … but you can already guess at the typical conscientiousness levels in general across multiple fields, genres, and so forth.

PostScript and Acrobat streamlined this process immensely because you can get proofs of the nearly finished work at the intended page size.

Adobe Preflight makes it so you as an author can see the book as intended.

But how many times has this happened for you?

It’s nice to see people doing this right.
