Support for the Wall

For the first time since polling on the topic began, a majority supports the construction of a border wall on the border with Mexico.

The previously fringe idea, popularized as a campaign pledge by former President Donald Trump, has gained traction amid a spiraling crisis at the border, with record numbers of immigrants crossing daily. According to a new Monmouth University poll, 53% supports the construction of a border wall, compared to just 46% who oppose it.

Give it a bit more time, and 90% will support it, which will change exactly nothing because politicians on both Left and Right desperately want immigration to grow.

    Wouldn’t a border wall be fairly useless for people who intend to abuse the broken asylum system?

      People would support any measure that would stop the flow of migrants but nobody is proposing any other measure. There’s a lot that could be done, and I keep listing it here but it’s not publicly discussed anywhere. People simply don’t know what can be done, and the wall is the only option, in their minds.

        This proposal by Lindsey Graham seems very reasonable to me:

        The fact that people travel the entirety of Mexico and other countries to get to the US and ask for asylum is beyond ridiculous. Same thing is happening in Europe and other places. No matter how woke you are or progressive, this does not make sense.

        I think there are really deep underlying problems with Western Democratic systems that have made them incapable of quick decisive actions to stop this very clear abuse of the system, and people are starting to look at authoritarianism for solutions. What is clear to me, this is not only a US problem because Europe is having the same problems and even worse.

    As long as you live under “human rights” legislation or “civil rights” law, there is no solution. Abolish human rights and civil rights legislation and a plethora of solutions for this and other ills will appear.

      Totally disagree with this. Fixing the asylum abuse problem is very easy and deporting any violators is also VERY easy without resorting to violating anyone’s human rights.

      The only people who espouse doing away with human and civil rights are those who have never been targeted for prosecution by an oppressive regime. We DO NOT need to become Russia to address these issues!

        Why is it so hard then? Both under dem and republican administrations.
