It’s considered to be progressive to import slave labor and brag about it openly. I’ve been hearing this argument about cheap produce requiring millions of illegal immigrants from colleagues on the Left for years. When you ask them why this work can’t be automated, like it’s been in poorer countries for decades, they pout.
What’s funny is that the opposition calls people like this Warren dude “Marxists.” Marxists have their faults but cheering on the exploitation of workers to please the bourgeoisie is not one of them.
Yeah, they’re also skipping the part where strawberries have to be blanket-sprayed with fungicide every year just to keep them alive– poisons the soil, poisons all the nearby waterways, poisons the workers.
Strawberries are nice. You should grow a small patch of them yourself if you want to eat them. They’re basically evil as a product of big ag.

So, you know, if you want to virtue-signal, the thing to do is conspicuously *not eat strawberries* for ethical reasons. Not *hey, kids, let’s learn about why you’re wrong for opposing agricultural serfdom!*
You know what else exploitative farm labor does?
There are thousands of young people out there right now who want to be farmers– get out there, grow food, do it right– and they can’t even get a toe in the door because if you’re trying to do it without slave labor and mass poisoning, you can’t compete in the current market. And that’s before you get to what absentee investors have done to the price of land.
But hey, average farmer being 70 years old is totally fine, right?

“progressive to import slave labor and brag about it”
What a difference a few decades (and neoliberalism) can make…
In 1960 there was a documentary migrant farm labor “Havest of Shame”.
In the early 70s I remember a TV movie on the plight of migrant laborers (‘the Migrants’).
Now rather than exploit citizens the US imports serfs and liberals preen about it as if they’re doing the world a favor.

“Who will be serving our coffee in Pret?” says the white liberal woman so oblivious to her own class privilege that she’s too obtuse to notice: https://youtu.be/y24VBzlAU_g?si=G18noU4fQ9oPVif-
