Our less sophisticated brethren are taking the dishonest reporting about Trump’s bloodbath comments seriously because they still think that if it’s on TV, it has to be true.

The somewhat more cognitively capable know that they are being lied to but find convoluted ways of justifying the con:

No, Trump didn’t promise to drown people who won’t vote for him in blood. Yes, he was simply describing the state of the US automotive industry. But still, the lies are justified because he’s dangerous.

Why is he dangerous?

Because he makes scary comments.

Which ones?

Well, the one about the bloodbath.

But he didn’t really make it.

Yes, but still.

Totally makes sense.

I’m not very interested in what Trump says because his words and actions rarely intersect. But I’m very interested in the workings of propaganda.

      See, this is the kind freaky shite that happens to women when they’re not allowed to admit that they actually wanted to have kids. Their brains spend all day trying to reconcile the disconnect by making up stories about how they could have babies (and incidentally, sex with men who aren’t self-declared “feminists”), but it *wouldn’t be their fault* so they’d still be virtuous feminists.

        I never watched the TV show but the novel is not good. Atwood is a good writer but this particular novel, in my opinion, is a fail. I guess one has to share the fetish to appreciate this stuff.

          I’ve read a few of Attwood’s books (including that one) and stories. She’s a competent writer, though sometimes I get her conflated with Joyce Carol Oates (who imo is better). Did not like that book. I suppose fans could legit say it’s because I’m one of those far-right patriarchy types so of course. (shrugs) I’m gonna go instead with… I don’t have daddy issues, and I’ve made peace with the biological drive to reproduce. I recognize it, respect it in myself, and also recognize there are serious downsides to letting it sit in the driver’s seat. For some reason that puts me on the outs with both religious fundies *and* feminists. So it’s good that I don’t need their approval 😉

      I read the book thought it was okay for what it was (became very familiar with it as I bought it at an airport on the way to Poland where finding anything in English was a challenge).

      I also saw the movie made around the same time (pretty bad though Faye Dunaway had a moment or two) .

      I knew that feminists were larping as handmaids (since a certain subset of feminists can’t function without ‘patriarchal oppression’ and demand it when it’s lacking) but…. the idea that anyone found it arousing is….. very disturbing. The only sex scene in the book was about as erotic as a seminar on paint drying (with lots of film examples and comparative charts…). The night club that the men went to was also about as exciting as an exhibition of carboard boxes…

      A lot of people need firm boundaries to rebel against (wanting to fail) and they go clean off the rails when they don’t have it.

        on Handmaids…. I forgot to mention I haven’t seen the series at all and have no desire to. It was a finite story with a clear ending and not something that can be dragged out over multiple seasons.
