My Uber driver is “known for great conversation”, and why, God, why, and hasn’t this injury that prevents me from driving been punishment enough already?

The only great conversation with a stranger is the one that never took place. I want my grumpy, solitary life back.

I’m with you there. Why do people think that silence is awkward?

As advertised, the driver is very, and I mean VERY, talkative.

I run on the assumption that such people are just lonely and insecure, and I try not to hold it against them.

But being around them is a chore.

Why not proselytize for your favorite cause/bug bear? You have a captive audience, the driver isn’t going anywhere (unless they kick you out of the car, which is unlikely). 🙂

We talked about the weather. 46 long, long minutes on the evergreen subject of weather.

      I wish I drank.

Used to hate small talk of all kinds too, but it’s something I’ve actually started to look forward to lately. Last time time I talked to a taxi driver it was about how he, an african guy, got some mafiosos smuggle him from a university in Moscow into the EU in the middle of winter.

Anyone driving a car for other people is pretty close to the bone as far as having direct experience of society – and an uber driver probably has all kinds of opinions about doing a job that’d normally be a self employed owner-operator kind of thing, and still kind of is, but now your boss is an algorithm.

Every chance you missed the opportunity for a much better conversation about things you’re actually interested in.
