Persimmons in Illinois

We found persimmons growing in the wild, and this seems very bizarre. Should there even be persimmons in Illinois?

They are smallish but extremely sweet.

    1. Yes, exactly, smaller than a golf ball. But sweeter than any other kind I’ve tried. And I’ve spent a lifetime chasing them. I’m a huge fan. I once ate unripe ones in the USSR and almost perished.

      1. Nice! I think I’ve never had a truly ripe one. I’ve hated every single one I tried. My grandmother grew the domesticated version, big as apples and so pretty. And they were awful. I liked to photograph the wild ones in the fall, at our last place– one of the few trees around here that loses its leaves, and that little flash of orange is so beautiful.

  1. Persimmons seem to straddle the line between a tomato and a pumpkin! Carbohydrates and Glycemic Index: A medium-sized persimmon (about 25 grams) contain roughly 9 grams of carbohydrates. The glycemic index (GI) of persimmons is about 61, which falls into the moderate GI range. Despite their carb content, persimmons don’t send your blood glucose levels on a rollercoaster ride.

Persimmons have high soluble fiber is like the Gandalf of digestion—it slows down the absorption of sugar; also great for managing cholesterol and keeping your digestive system happy. High in ellagic acid, is like a superhero cape against chronic diseases, such as diabetes.

Perhaps someone should write a fiction novel using fruits and vegies as the Main characters something like George Orwell’s Animal Farm.
