I find it easier to teach Zoomers than millennials. Today teaching is easier than 15-20 years ago. Zoomers are tired of bullshit that their generational predecessors lapped up. They are serious, driven, and curious. I’m not noticing any of the Millennial close-mindedness.

People derive their negative impressions regarding Zoomers from TikTok and not from being around actual 20-year-olds.

I’m not saying that Millennials were horrible. Zoomers are simply better, that’s all. Like a Greek salad is better than Caesar.

    Can you say more? I’m a (geriatric) millennial. Sometimes I feel like my education suffered from my generation being the object of a dumb woke experiment. I want to know what I’m missing with my closed mind!

    “Zoomers than millennials”

    American generations don’t map onto those in other countries for lots of reasons… but I’ve noticed a huge difference in the last two years (especially this year). I have classes with first and second year students (among others) and this year’s first year is way beyond the current second year… I’m not complaining but aside from the ongoing computer illiteracy (and none of them have printers at home….) they’re just…. more there and more aware of things. More of a qualitative than quantitative difference. Most of them watched a (very badly organized and very dumb) presidential candidate debate last week and had things to say about it… this is an earthquake change since usually Polish students are aggressively apathetic about politics.

    But weirdness also remains… in an elective course (including students from outside my unit) there’s a not small and very hairy guy who wears sundresses (but very very smart so I’m not complaining) and a small but noticeable number of female students wear pale white or yellow face powder… I first assumed it was something from anime (it’s vaguely reminiscent of geisha whiteface) but it might be a goth thing…

    Italy’s entry to this year’s Eurovision does something similar….

    I think each of the two generations has its advantages and disadvantages, but the smartest zoomers are much better educated than the smartest millennials. I’m beginning to catch up, but I know 23 year olds who make me feel like an idiot. And having grown up with all the things millennials fought for (sex positivity, etc.) many of them can see that this stuff is dumb.

    On the negative side, zoomers are a generation of extremes. Hardcore socialists, hardcore white supremacists, extremely online, extremely dysfunctional, extremely impressionable (even beyond what you usually see in that age group.) More people who make it to their 20s without ever having been in a relationship. It’s a minority of zoomers but a worrisome one. I’ve also noticed that zoomers can be oddly anti-social, but that might bother you less 😛

    The best of zoomers seem quite promising in a way millennials aren’t though. I’m skeptical we’re going to see many great millennial artists and writers. It’s not entirely our fault, part of it is the cultural moment we came of age into, but it is what it is. I am glad I’m old enough to have not grown up with the internet in my hand 24/7 though.

      Maybe that’s why I like the Zoomers. I’m also one level extra on everything I do. It’s the dopamine receptors thing. I need more of everything because it takes a huge dosage to feel the hit.

        I think the “one level extra” is both the best and worst of zoomers. Millennials, for better or worse, are a very phlegmatic generation.
