My Duolingo app tells me that the most popular Duolingo language in Sweden is … Swedish.

In somewhat related news, out of the 8 international students on my campus who had their visas revoked, 7 already have them back.

According to Duolingo’s 2024 Language Report, English was the top language to study in 135 countries—up from 122 the previous year—highlighting its global appeal for education, career advancement, and international communication.

Several students at my university have also had their visas restored.

So what was the point of cancelling them in the first place? All it’s done has convinced the best and brightest potential students (the ones any country would be very happy to get) to go elsewhere. It seems like there was either no no coherent policy to begin with or total incompetents were put in charge of reviewing the student visas.

Where exactly is elsewhere, though? I came to work US for graduate school. There were zero other options. In my field, it’s either here or not at all.

I think students in STEM and business fields have a lot more options than you would in Spanish literature. I have friends with an insanely smart daughter who opted for a medical research PhD in the UK. And I know the Germans are extremely eager to get more international students in STEM fields and have been making all sorts of reforms and new programs to make it easier for international students. But those efforts are all aimed at STEM fields, they’ve done absolutely nothing to get more students in the humanities.
