That may be true but he was always quite cautious around this topic. To come out like this, very upfront, chapeau to him because it still takes courage, especially if you are a public figure with a large following in academia.
And yes, he’s still going to be cancelled. At least in the UK.

I fully agree, just really annoyed it took this long. About 10 years late, but I’m glad this correction is finally occurring.
