Hold on to your old cars for dear life:
Enough Republicans joined the Dems in voting for this that the measure passed. It’s very disappointing.

Well, crap.
Completely after all the surveillance/control concerns:
This eliminates the used car market, effectively making cars a thing nobody under $100k/yr can afford.
There is already no secondhand market for electric cars. They can’t be repaired economically.

Yep. This is class war, pure and simple. An enormous number of people are pushed out of the job market.
This is by far the worst, most dangerous thing happening right now. And nobody is even noticing.

With any luck, it’ll go the way of electric vehicle mandates in CA: totally unworkable, so it gets scrapped.
But dang.
We are house shopping again, and after reading up on this, I am now wondering if we should just scrap that, talk to the rest of the fam, and start looking for a family compound instead, because we’re gonna have to rework our transport situation over the next five years so that there are fifteen or twenty of us sharing a passenger van, at least until such time as it becomes safe to use 50cc bikes on the roads.
All my VN friends are finally prosperous enough to start having cars. We are going the other direction.

Another beautiful part of this bill:
“If your vehicle senses that you are in a “panic” driving state or have the “big eyes” (unintentionally locking onto an object for too long), the vehicle will determine that you are not fit to drive. The vehicle will remain in a Park state and will not allow the shifter to transition into the Drive state.”
I’m still hoping it will be repealed if people raise enough stink. It’s a terrible idea on every level. It’s worse than COVID vaccines.

PANIC states? Make your car inoperable?
How many lawsuits is it gonna take to end that, because somebody couldn’t get their wife/kid/friend to the hospital, and they died? WTAF?
That didn’t sound real so I had to look it up first.

Right? And there are many parts like this. How did this garbage pass?

I would actually love to hear the neggie’s thoughts on this one.
Does it think this will not have a disproportionately negative effect on lower-income people, or does it think that punishing lower-income people is good?
Or does it think we are just making stuff up?

I remember some time ago you were looking for the new used car and were asking for suggestions. Have you decided what to buy?

Yes, my husband found a 2022 Toyota Corolla that I’m hoping to keep forever at this point. It does have a tendency to give me cloying reports on the quality of my driving that make me feel like I have an infantilizing administrator in the vehicle with me at all times. But at least it doesn’t stop and lock me out if it doesn’t like the size of my eyes.

Corollas are the best on so many levels. Good gas mileage, last forever, parts availability, price, and the all-important: timing chains not belts.
