“Mommy, our teacher is very grim. She keeps telling us how white people used to hurt black people. She has many stories like that.”
“What do you do when she tells the stories?”
“We just sit there being white.”

Why would you do this to a kid whose parents aren’t even from the US?
It doesn’t make sense even in the nonsensical universe of “you’re responsible for the sins of your great great great great grandparents”.

That was my usual response in faculty meetings when we were told to do racial penance. “I’m not from here. This has nothing to do with me.” The komissars would start spluttering really badly, it’s funny to watch them.

Why don’t we go back to telling the civil rights story as a triumph of the oppressed? Right now the way we’re telling it is… yeah whatever, total fail, you’re all still oppressed. I don’t get the need to steal a real, actual victory from people.

Hmmm, well, you are sufficiently knowledgeable to straighten out the ignorant teacher, it is not like your daughter can do much about the ugly situation:

We’re having the first snow of the year in the highlands. The middle of SA is a plateu, which makes it much colder than Australia despite being on the same latitude.
People are taking the opportunity to be racist and xenophobic, as if anyone needed an excuse.
